Rape Resistance Survey: Informed Consent

You are being asked to participate in a research survey conducted by Dr. Patricia Rozee, a professor at California State University, and her colleague Michelle McKenzie, author of a memoir on her own rape survival. In order to participate in this survey you must be a woman over 18 who is a survivor of rape or attempted rape and were 16 years old or older at the time of the rape or attempted rape.

The goal of this research is to gather information to help women who find themselves in a potential rape situation.  We are interested in the methods, sequence and motivations for resistance in both rape and attempted rape situations.

If you volunteer to participate you will simply click the Begin Survey button at the bottom of this page, which will take you to our survey. You can expect to spend 20 minutes to complete the survey. After you have completed the survey you will press the Submit Survey button which will take you to a page that will provide sexual assault crisis information as well as more detailed information about sexual assault resistance and about this study in particular.

Sometimes taking a survey about a past traumatic experience can dig up some unwanted memories or even cause reliving the emotions and fear of the assault. We encourage you to contact a support person, counselor, pastor or local hotline counselor if you feel fearful or depressed after completing the survey. At the end of the survey we will also provide a helpful link to an online hotline as well as the 800 number for the national sexual assault hotline. Some of the questions about sexual assault resistance can also bring up regrets or disappointment . We want to assure you that you made the best possible decision AT THAT MOMENT with all the information at hand. If you were unconscious, you had no opportunity to resist. Whether you resisted or not, the sexual assault was not your fault.

The benefits of participation are that you will be helping other women who find themselves in a similar situation. We hope that the study will give you some insights on the latest research on sexual assault resistance and empower you to make strong decisions. You will get information on the best ways to resist rape and attempted rape, using the most effective verbal and physical resistance strategies. In addition you will benefit by receiving current resources and information about sexual assault prevention, resistance, self-defense, and sexual assault support resources for yourself and your female relatives and friends.

Please answer every question to the best of your ability.  This survey is anonymous, we have no way to identify you, so please be as honest as possible in your responses. If you do not know the answer or you feel uncomfortable answering it is okay to skip any question. You can also or terminate the survey at any time without consequences of any kind.
